SAATHI aims to equip students with necessary skills to become peer educators and take charge against substance abuse in their schools and communities.

STRENGTHENING SCHOOLS

SAATHI provides support system to school administration and teachers to help them prevent substance abuse at school level.

LIFE SKILLS TRAINING FOR STUDENTS

Teacher Coordinators and peer educators hold parental counseling sessions to de-stigmatize and provide knowledge patterns and prevention strategies on substance abuse.

TEACHER’S TRAINING

Through this process , SAATHI Aims to reach out to communities in Sikkim to spread awareness and sensitize the public at large about drug abuse ill effects and how communities can be empowered to take actions against these issues. It is also to seek help of communities to stop selling of drugs to children by medicine shops, curb menace of alcohol and engage with panchayat and wards through a participatory approach.

PARENTAL COUNSELLING

The annual day of SAATHI is organized to showcase the progress of the organization, where hundreds of SAATHI school come together meet one another, participate in the event.

Counselors & Volunteers Training

In pursuance of its goal of reaching out to victims of substances abuse, SAATHI conducts many activities. Over the last three years, it has concluded numerous trainings, counselling sessions and community outreach activities from 2016- 2019. This steps in the process is about involving certified counselor in the project who could provide assistance and help in cases of reported substance abuse cases from the schools and also help provide assistance to the teacher coordinators or the volunteers who would like to be associated with the project.

Program elements:

Extension of program (Schools): 

  • By using cluster mode, 60 best performing SAATHI schools in Sikkim, will collaborate and sensitize 180 schools. Each of the 60 schools will adopt 3 nearby schools. The roles of the leader schools will be defined.
  • SAATHI team of 60 schools will visit 180 schools and interact with School heads, teacher coordinators and peer educators. Explain them about importance of SAATHI program. Total 240 schools will cover 50,000 students.
  • Situation Assessment: SAATHI team shall monitor the progress of program in 60 schools as well as other 180 schools. The first intervention itself will enable the team to capture the baseline data for the individual school.

Offsite camp & Life skills training (Students): 

  • Offsite training camp for 1,800 students of extended schools. Students will be trained on various aspects of substance abuse and also to build students’ capacity to prevent them from the menace of substance use.
  • Session on life skills will be organized for 60 schools. Initially 10 students will be selected from each school. A total of 1,800 students will be trained. The training program will comprise of critical thinking, decision-making, effective communication, time management, listening skills, conflict management as well as skills for developing healthy relationships, Level 1 counselling for students and a positive self-concepts. This training will provide students with protective behavioural and self-management skills, such as resisting negative peer pressure.

 

Counsellors (Development of counselling capacity):

  • Counsellors will be identified from every GPU and ULB and training will be provided on basic skills of counselling. Total of 180 counsellors will be identified.
  • District-wise and Block-wise counsellors will be identified and connected to schools and colleges.
  • Training of counsellors identified. 180 counsellors will be trained.
  • Monthly counselling will be conducted in every school by professional counsellors.
  • In case of severe cases, rehabilitation support will also be provided to the students.

Sensitization of teachers and value education (Teachers): 

  • The present education system is mostly job-oriented, competition based, money and material driven, lack of service mindset and the overall development of children’s values is neglected. As a result, children are losing their basic values. It is very important to inculcate values like integrity, honesty, truth, hard work, empathy, ethics and virtues among our children. Hence, all the teachers will be sensitized regarding issues of substance abuse and mental health of children through value education and training. Total 300 teachers will be trained in year 2 and 300 teachers in year 3.
  • Sensitization and review meetings will be organized 240 School Heads.
  • Total 180 teachers will be trained on counselling skills from extended schools, so that they can deal with substance abuse cases at initial level.

Community partnership (Community outreach):

Building community partnerships will allow us to address the problem in depth from multiple directions.

  • Community outreach program will be organized by 60 schools.
  • World Anti-Drugs Day: District-wise program will be organized to observe world anti-drugs day on 26th
  • No Tobacco Day: District-wise program will be organized on 31st May, to observe No Tobacco Day.

Panchayats & Councillors Outreach: 

  • The panchayats in all the GPUs and Councillors in all the ULBs that we will be working with will counsel the parents or guardians of respective areas. We will work closely with them to facilitate the findings and the methodologies of proper help and care through them and communities. This number will exceed 180 working panchayats and counsellors.

Outreach to community (Parental guidance): 

  • Door to Door campaign: 60 schools will organize door to door campaign and share information with parents and guardians on how to recognise symptoms of drug abuse. 60 schools will reach minimum of 14 households per year. The members of GPU and ULB will also be involved in this campaign. Will cover 2,500 households in 3 years.

Deaddiction centres:

SAATHI has been working with every government and private de-addiction centres across the state. We will continue to work with them in an advanced manner than before in terms of counselling and facilitating support.

  • The Centre for De-addiction and Detoxification, situated in Chuaatar – Singtam, East Sikkim as devoted a wing in favour of SAATHI where the students will be given special priority and care while treatment. SAATHI will be monitoring the cases individually.
